A valve radio for live stations from every country
Lateband is a free web radio that looks, feels and sounds like an old receiver. Turn the dial and real stations drift in out of the static.
Turn it onWhat it is
Lateband is a tribute to the valve radio: the wooden set on the kitchen shelf that took a moment to warm up, lit its glass scale and pulled voices out of the noise. The stations are real, live streams from the open Radio Browser catalogue, laid out on long, medium and short wave and FM much as you would hear them in that country. Everything in between is made right here in the browser: the hiss of the ionosphere, fading and drift, overdriven valves, a small speaker. Turn the dial slowly. The air rewards patience.
What you can do
- Tune by hand. Turn the dial, drag the scale for bigger jumps, or use the arrows to hop between stations; hold an arrow to scan.
- Travel. Pick any country, or a region within it, and the FM dial becomes the local one, while long, medium and short wave carry the whole country.
- Five bands. LW, MW, SW, FM and AIR, where air traffic, weather radio and marine feeds sit at their real VHF frequencies.
- See what is playing. Like RDS on a car radio, the display alternates the station name with “Artist — Track”. Tap the readout to copy or save the track.
- Keep favourites. Star stations from any country; the Favourites dial gathers them all, each back on the frequency where you found it.
- Choose the character. One slider runs from a perfectly clean stream to rough shortwave. At zero, a tuned station plays exactly as broadcast.
- Five looks. Light, Graphite, Black, Retro with a glowing VFD display, and Phosphor in amber on black.
Install it as an app
iPhone and iPad: In Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. Lateband then opens full screen, like any other app.
Mac: In Safari, choose File › Add to Dock. Lateband gets its own window and a place in the Dock.
Android, Chrome and Edge: Click the install icon at the right end of the address bar, or open the browser menu and choose Install.
Installed, it opens full screen, keeps its settings and updates itself in the background.
Questions
- Is Lateband free?
- Yes. No account, no ads.
- Are the radio stations real?
- Yes. Every broadcast station is a real live stream from the open Radio Browser catalogue. Only the beacons, time signals, teletype, radio amateurs and the static between stations are generated in your browser.
- Can I hear the stream without the static?
- Yes. Move the slider under the dial all the way to the left: a tuned station then plays exactly as broadcast, while the dial between stations keeps its hiss.
- Does it work on iPhone and Android?
- Yes, in any modern browser, and it installs as an app. On iPhone, check the silent switch if there is no sound.
- Which languages does it speak?
- English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Hindi. It follows your system language; you can change it in Settings.
